Boom Selection: blog of mashup, bootlegs, electro, breaks, glitch, grime and glamour

with one comment

A lovely mp3 blog: Boom Selection: blog of mashup, bootlegs, electro, breaks, glitch, grime and glamour.

Funny bit: “certain american blogger-cum-hipster-hop-intelligista seem to be getting into grime at the moment. typical - you wait years for the uk’s answer to hip-hop, then the yanks nick it back!”

Sorry about that. True story: last night I was here in my house in Wyoming drinking a 40, listening to grime and reading A Thousand Years of Non-Linear History and realized I *had* to be the only person in this state, nay this region, doing just that.

New NIN video

with 2 comments

It, for lack of a better word, sucks.

The lyrics sound like self-parody. The vocals seem empty. And the music, though catchy, is flat. It sounds like a Stabbing Westard or Gravity kills track, really. I hope the rest of the album is better.

Tech N9ne

without comments

Just bought tickets to see Tech N9ne in Ft. Collins.

You can download a track here, but it’s not one of my favorites. Better to check out the video section of his web site. The videos aren’t all that great, but those are some of his better tracks.

Dear God, help me

with one comment

I can’t stop listening to reggae. Anyone who knows me knows this means there’s very clearly something the matter with me.

I want somebody to take me to the hospital.

This is all Richard Metzger’s fault. They don’t call him “wicked warlock” for nothing, I guess.

The Good Die Young

with 2 comments

I’ve been so preoccupied with other things in my life right now that I didn’t notice the 3 year anniversary of the last time anyone saw Jon.

Wherever you are Jon, we all still miss you.

Steroid Maximus Aclectasis

with one comment

A song that’s been on rotation too much lately: Steroid Maximus’s Aclectasis. It’s the theme song for The Venture Brothers, but I’ve been a Thirwell fan for a long time. It’s about time i tracked down his newer (past few years) works.

I found the song on this Idiot’s Guide to Dreaming post. There’s another exotica post here.

Immortal Technique: Bin Laden

with 13 comments

I’ve only recently learned about Immortal Technique, but people are calling him the new Rakim or the new Chuck D. I don’t know about all that, but he’s amazing. And this song with DJ Green Lantern is the most intense anti-Bush songs yet.

download it at the Hip Hop Foundry.

Mc 900 Ft. Jesus: While the City Sleeps

I was just thinkin’ MC Frontalot reminded me a little of MC 900 Ft. Jesus. Oddly enough, Scenestars has “While the City Sleeps” and “The Killer Inside Me” online right now.

Old Dirty Bastard RIP

with 5 comments

Rapper ODB collapses and dies in recording studio:

One of the most flamboyant characters in hip-hop, the rap artist ODB, collapsed and died in a recording studio on Saturday at the age of 35.

ODB, born Russell Jones, had complained of chest pains before collapsing outside his Manhattan studio and was dead by the time paramedics arrived. The cause of death was not immediately clear. Mr Jones had recently finished a prison sentence for drug possession and escaping a rehabilitation clinic but no drug paraphernalia was found at the scene. Today would have been his 36th birthday.

Wireless Music’s New Social Sound

with one comment

Oh yeah, this is what I’m talking about:

As one participant naturally sways to the groove, the PDA’s motion sensor detects his motion and shifts the tempo of the song. With the song’s intensity building, another listener subconsciously grips her PDA tighter, introducing echo effects into the mix. The closer that listening partners move to each other, the more prominent their part in the song becomes. Meanwhile, the software applies various “error correction” techniques to prevent an onslaught of arrhythmic noise, unless of course that’s the goal. As they listen to it, the mobile music orchestra transforms the tune into a dubby, spacey version of the familiar Bjork song.

[...]

An artist, he says, might release a song from an upcoming album specially prepared for the Malleable Music System. Someday, malleable music may even become an art form in its own right, leading to a duet between the artist and the audience.

Mosh for the future

with one comment

A couple years ago I was talking to my friend Cody, an MC, about Eminem. Cody said he respected Eminem’s skills but he wished he would push a more positive message.

Well, here it is. I can barely believe it. Gone is the social apathy and nihilism of his previous work, in its place is an uplifting message about collective action.

Archive.org Quicktime download

GNN Quicktime stream

From the director:

When I got the callback that our favorite conspirator of controversy, Eminem would be releasing an album in November, I knew we had the potential to say something that would be heard by the masses. And after hearing the song later that month it seemed Mr. Mathers had also been in the lab concocting his own plans for the election and it was precisely the anthem I had been looking for. So with less than six weeks to deliver we put together a team and forgot about what it meant to sleep. In order to produce animation for a song that runs 5:20 in just over 5 weeks we were going to need a lot of green tea and mate and a little help from Marshall himself. This video was made possible by a team of artists who came together inspired by a song and video that might be able to effect the next four years of all of our lives.

Two years ago, this video would not have been approved by a single record label. A year ago it would never had the possibility of being played on television. But with the changing tide of public sentiment marked by the success of our last video for Chronic Future, an anti-war message that made it into rotation on TRL we think it might just have a chance.

From Eminem:

President Bush is “like dog chasing its tail,” the Hollywood-bound Eminem tells the magazine set for publication during the first week of November.

RS: You get deep into your feelings about President Bush and Iraq on “Mosh.” Do you think the Iraq War was a mistake?

E: He’s been painted to be this hero and he’s got our troops over there dying for no reason. I haven’t heard an explanation yet that I can understand. Explain to us why we have troops over there dying.

RS: There is no good answer.

E: I think he started a mess. America is the best country there is, the best country to live in. But he’s f**kin’ that up and could run our country into the ground. He jumped the gun, and he f**ked up so bad he doesn’t know what to do right now. He’s in a tailspin, running around like a dog chasing its tail. And we got young people over there dyin’, kids in their teens, early twenties that should have futures ahead of them. And for what? It seems like a Vietnam 2. Bin Laden attacked us and we attacked Saddam. We ain’t heard from Saddam for ten years, but we go attack Saddam. Explain why that is. Give us some answers.

RS: Are you voting?

E: This is the first year I’ve registered to vote. And I’m gonna vote. Bush is definitely not my homie, but I’m still undecided. Kerry has been known to say some things that’s caught my attention, made a few statements I’ve liked, but I don’t know. Whatever my decision is, I would like to see Bush out of office. I don’t wanna see my little brother get drafted. He just turned eighteen. I don’t want to see him lose his life. People think their votes don’t count, but people need to get out and vote. Every motherf**kin’ vote counts.
