Laramie, WY

Been living in the “Berkley of Wyoming” for two weeks now, and so far so good. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how comfortable I am in this town. It’s not really in any sense urban, and though I haven’t been there, I wouldn’t compare it to Berkley. But it’s got plenty of bookstores, coffee shops, and cheap restaurants. There’s two brew pubs in town, one of which sells pints for $2.50. There’s even a vegetarian restaurant, which isn’t actually an issue for me but it’s just nice to know it’s there I guess. Last week Susan and I went to a live hip-hop show on campus. It wasn’t all that good, but it wasn’t bad and nothing like that ever goes on in Sheridan.

The population is more diverse than Sheridan, but still seems very white and very straight. Laramie has a sizeable Hispanic population, but they seem mostly segregated off on the west side.

On the home front, my basement apartment is quite nice (aside from heating issues) and my housemates are really cool. Here’s an online radio station run by one of them.

There’s a reason nobody ever refers to Berkeley as the “Laramie of California.”

Best of luck up there. And if you run into anybody from Cody between the ages of, say, 25-28, ask ‘em if they know me.

And don’t ever pretend to be gay. Even as a joke. Trust me on this.

Oh my God, don’t I know it =) I lived in Sheridan, Wyoming for 5 years before moving to Olympia for college, and just moved back a few months ago. I made my fair share of enemies by wearing a dress to school one day when I was a sophomore in high school.

I don’t know anyone from Cody, but I’ll if I run into anyone I’ll ask about ya =)
