Opera vs. Firefox
Just downloaded the new version of the browser formerly known as Firebird, and I’m still not impressed with it. There’s a ton of basically small UI things that make Opera 7.21 preferable to me. And there’s more important things like mouse gestures and saving tabs, though those can be added with extentions (but why bother?). this discussion of the pros and cons of Opera and Firebird goes into a lot more detail than I feel like going into at the moment. Two things from Firefox I’d like to see on Opera: make it smart enough to distinquish between intentional pop-ups (like certain features of Movable Type use) and unintentional pop-ups (ie, ads). And the ability to add a list of sites to allow pop-ups on. It only takes two clicks to turn pop-ups on or off in Opera, but it would be nice not to have to.
Here’s the main conclusion I’ve drawn (in reference to Windows only, the last version of Opera I used on a Mac was pretty bad and I’ve never used it on Linux): if you don’t want to either pay $40 to register an app or have two Google text ads on your toolbar, then get Firefox. If using open source software is more important to you than ease of use and features, then get Firefox. Otherwise, get Opera.
