OK, not quite, but check this: 
Much respect to Nissan for allowing us to use their billboards and radio commercials as works of art, representing the kultcha of Electric MOYO and promoting our message of freedom, access and respect. These works of artistic messaging would not have been possible without Nissan’s permission, and as a result our works are more powerful and farther reaching. The message of Electric MOYO is not about vandalism and does not promote it. My message is about harnessing the power of responsible artistic expression with corporate participation to bring about more freedom, access and respect for myself and the people of Electric MOYO. So to all you natty, freakazoid creators in Electric MOYO land, I’ve got but one thing to say. Keep it live, keep it legit and keep it legal. Oh, and keep loggin’ on as our conversation continues.
I also agree with Abe when he says “Truthfully I’d like to see this done right. I have no problems with big car company money funding young artists. But do it in a way that doesn’t embarrass us ok? It might even sell a car or two.” The main reason this is going to fail is not because of its in in-authenticity, but because it’s just dumb. Even if this were done right, graffiti artists and DJs probably still wouldn’t buy the car. That’s not what Nissan’s expecting; they expect a bunch of suburban white kids to get their parents to buy them Altimas because they seem hip-hop. I think those animated Volkswagon commercials are actually much better, and will probably reach the audience Nissan is targeting.
What Do I Know has a good discussion going about street art being co-opted for commercial purposes. Someone named Andy says:
Here in San Diego we have billboards for a country radio station that have been faux-tagged over with the radio call sign/frequency for an “edgier” alternative station, both of course owned by the same media giant. Same sort of idea I guess.
Another poster talked about The Boxfresh Zapatista campaign in which a clothing store put up a bunch of Zapatista themed graffiti around London. But an activist group outed them and actually got them to agree to the following:
1. They would from this moment on donate every penny of profit from there Zapatista merchandise to the Zapatistas themselves.
2. They would install a computer in the shop with a range of Zapatista sites on it.
3. They would no longer put their logo on the adverts with Sub Comandante Marcos’s words on them.
4. They would have a leaflet in the store explaining the history of the Zapatista’s and in all further marketing attempt to spread information about the Zapatista cause and their ethics as opposed to simply using them in soundbites and as an aesthetic.
Pretty impressive.
I think street art is headed for a big change in aesthetics soon. New styles, possibly new media. What could replace spray paint and markers?
I’m looking forward to seeing video graffiti, but I think that’s a ways off. There’s been pirate TV, but it’s tough to pull off and the consequences faced are dire. Graffiti has been vital because people can do visible work without much risk. There are a number of “virtual graffiti” projects out there, such as Geonotes but these sort of annotation systems aren’t *really* graffiti because people will be filtering what they see. Video vandalism will have to force people to see new things, sometimes things they don’t want to see, projected onto walls or some such. But it needs to be untraceable, and needs to stay off regulated airwaves.
